Along the East River at the peak of winter, tugboats force their way through the ice shield to get a tanker to its destination.
Tugboats break through the East River, packed shore to shore in ice, along the Upper East Side of Manhattan. As they break through on their way to Hell Gate, the ice swarms back in from shore to shore.
Most New York winters are not this severe, so the sight of these powerful tugs pushing through the ice flow was an exceptional image to capture.
